Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-05-29 · Applies to version 1.6.1 (macOS + iOS / iPadOS)

TL;DR

Nota6 does not collect, transmit, or store any user data on a server we control. It runs entirely on your devices and reads only the Markdown files you explicitly open. Reading preferences sync between your Mac, iPad, and iPhone via your own iCloud account (Apple-managed, opt-out via iCloud system settings).

What we collect

Nothing. Nota6 has no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting service, no advertising SDKs, no third-party trackers. We never see your files, your preferences, your usage patterns, or even whether you use the app.

What we store on your device

To preserve your settings between launches, Nota6 saves the following to your own device (in standard user defaults, never transmitted off-device by us):

None of this data is sent to any server we operate. Uninstall removes everything; on macOS you can also reset preferences via defaults delete com.coldplay.nota6.

iCloud sync (optional)

Nota6 uses Apple's NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore to sync your reading preferences (theme, font, color, width, custom-theme colors) between devices that share an iCloud account. This data goes directly between your devices and Apple's iCloud — we never see it, store it, or proxy it. Total payload is a few hundred bytes per device. To opt out, disable iCloud Drive (or just iCloud for Nota6) in System Settings.

We do not sync: file contents, recent files, bookmarks, scroll positions, or workspace state. Those stay device-local.

What we render

Nota6 renders the Markdown files you open. If those files reference remote images (e.g. https://... URLs), the rendering engine (Apple's WebKit) will fetch those images, just as Safari would. We do not proxy, intercept, or log these requests.

KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, and syntax-highlighted code are rendered locally with libraries bundled inside the app. The built-in Reference Library (12 documents in English + Simplified Chinese) is bundled inside the app and read locally — no network involved.

No network requests are made for rendering or for browsing the Library.

Sandbox

Nota6 runs in the App Sandbox on both macOS and iOS with only read-only access to files you explicitly select. It cannot read your other documents, your camera, your microphone, your contacts, or any other resource on your device.

Children

Nota6 is suitable for all ages. It does not knowingly collect any data, from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and post a note in the app's release notes.
